Inspired by Yamaha's legendary racing tradition, the new XSR900 represents a significant improvement in performance and style.

The American Yamaha Motor Company has launched the latest version of its famous "Faster Son" design concept-the eye-catching and completely redesigned 2022 Yamaha XSR900. Inspired by Yamaha’s legendary racing tradition, the new XSR900 represents a major advancement in performance and style, with a new chassis, a more powerful 890cc engine, more advanced electronic components, and a brilliant new-looking racing machine derived from Yamaha’s 1980s classic Grand Prix .

"The new generation of XSR900 borrows its high-performance CP3 engine, chassis and electronic equipment directly from Yamaha's extensively updated 2021 MT-09 Hyper Naked to create the lightest, most agile, and most powerful motorcycle in its class," Yamaha Derek Brooks of said the motorcycle product line manager. "But what really sets this new bike apart is its styling. As someone who is very familiar with the history of Yamaha racing, it is great to see that the design team clearly nodded to our past iconic racing designs while incorporating so much technology. And high-quality details. This new XSR really cuts into the core of our passion for motorcycles."

Yamaha’s Sport Heritage motorcycle models are inspired by the brand’s seventy years of experience in designing and manufacturing famous and iconic motorcycles. During this period, the motorcycle world has continued to evolve, but the unique emotion and intense excitement of riding on two wheels has always remained the same. The Faster Sons design concept combines iconic style with modern technology to create a delightful and exciting motorcycle that can both recall the past and show the performance of today.

The bold and eye-catching new look of the next-generation Yamaha XSR900 is obvious from every angle. The fuel tank design, exposed aluminum frame and side profile draw clear inspiration from the iconic Yamaha racing car of the 1980s, and there is an unmistakable modern design element that highlights the machine's high performance capabilities. Full LED lighting, a new 3.5-inch full-color TFT display, and a series of high-quality touches-including drilled fork covers, machined headlight brackets, forged brake pedals, hidden passenger foot spikes, blacked-out joysticks, Dimmed brake tanks, rod-end mirrors, embossed aluminum rear soleplate and aluminum XSR logo-all these reflect a modern feel and a higher degree of fit and finish.

As an additional tribute to the XSR900 sporting tradition, one available color scheme is a modern interpretation of the classic French Sonauto Yamaha racing colors-a stunning combination of blue, cyan and yellow by the legendary French Grand Prix champion Christian Sa Propaganda by Christian Sarron, this is an important page of Yamaha’s rich racing history.

Finally, the ergonomics of the new XSR900 has also been improved to achieve a more aggressive appearance and new emphasis on the rider. The lowered head tube position, the unique sub-frame with lower seat height, and the extended rear swing arm improve straight-line performance, while maintaining the XSR900’s iconic sharp handling, allowing the rider to sit more inside the bicycle. XSR900’s larger capacity 890cc CP3 engine has the same specifications, individual components and fuel injection as Yamaha’s new 2021 MT-09. It has stronger power, stronger torque curve and more linearity, and can achieve excellent acceleration. Almost every major component, from pistons and connecting rods to crankshafts, camshafts and crankcases, has been redesigned and lightweight to reduce the overall weight of the engine and increase engine speed. In order to handle the increased torque levels, the auxiliary and slipper (A&S) clutches have been updated with new friction plates and improved cam angles to reduce the load on the clutch springs, thereby reducing the feel of the joystick.

Although the previous generation XSR900 is equipped with Yamaha chip controlled throttle (YCC-T), the new model takes the technology one step further by adding YZF-R1 accelerator position sensor handle (APSG). This is a complete wire control system, with a sensor in the twist handle, which can replicate different degrees of resistance to get the traditional throttle feel. The end result is a dynamic, torque-rich power unit, and the direct connection between the throttle handle and the rear tires is exciting.

A key feature of the new XSR900 is the new compact and lightweight aluminum frame. Yamaha's Controlled Fill (CF) die casting technology can produce complex frame structures that are lighter and stronger than traditional casting methods. The thinnest part of Yamaha's die-cast frame is only 1.7 mm, reducing overall weight, while improving the balance of longitudinal, lateral and torsional stiffness, enhancing linear stability and delivering excellent feedback to the rider. In addition, the lower head tube position helps to load the front to increase the feel when turning, providing the new XSR900 with agile and responsive handling characteristics.

Through Yamaha's unique new swaging process, the sporty 10-spoke aluminum wheels on the new XSR900 enhance the appearance while significantly reducing the unsprung weight. The result is improved suspension action and reduced moment of inertia for a more sensitive feeling, especially during cornering and braking.

High-quality components include a new Brembo radial front master cylinder, which provides better handling. In addition, the new front brake lever simplifies adjustability and improves appearance. The new suspension uses an upgraded fully adjustable 41mm KYB inverted front fork, which is now shorter and shorter due to the new head tube position. It is paired with an updated adjustable KYB rear shock, which tilts forward and is almost invisible, further enhancing the clean and aggressive side profile of the new model.

Taking the 2022 XSR900 to a new level of technological advancement is the most advanced Yamaha six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) used in the new MT-09. The new IMU has evolved into a smaller and lighter unit with two sensors that can measure three-axis angular velocity (pitch, roll, and yaw) and three-axis acceleration (forward/backward, up/down, and left/ To the right). The data is transmitted to the engine control unit (ECU), which controls an extended set of rider aids, including tilt-sensitive traction control system, slip control system (SCS), front wheel lift control system (LIF) and brake control (BC) )system. Each can be adjusted for different levels of intervention, or completely closed according to the rider's preferences.

Using the six-axis IMU data combined with the relative speed data of the front and rear wheels, the new tilt-sensitive traction control system adjusts the degree of intervention to correspond to the tilt angle of the bicycle. There are three intervention levels available.

When the IMU sensor detects that the rear wheels start to slide sideways, the ECU will intervene by reducing the drive of the rear wheels until the chassis is stable. There are three intervention levels available.

In order to prevent the front wheel from lifting during rapid start or rapid acceleration, when the IMU sensor detects the front wheel lifting, the ECU will adjust the driving power until the motorcycle stabilizes.

The BC system independently controls and adjusts the front and rear brake pressures to prevent accidental wheel lockup. The rider can choose one of two ABS braking modes: BC1 mode is a standard ABS active mode, suitable for straight braking conditions that do not include a tilt angle. BC2 mode uses IMU data to determine the tilt angle and changes the ABS sensitivity as the tilt angle increases. 

Yamaha engineers carefully considered the intake and exhaust sounds when developing the new XSR900, striving to emphasize and enhance the unique soundtrack of the cross-plane three-cylinder engine. The air box has been completely redesigned to include ducts of different cross-sections and lengths, and adjusted to make the induced noise resonate harmoniously at different wavelengths. Two functional air intakes located on both sides of the fuel tank further enhance the mid-to-high speed-sensing sound transmitted to the rider for a better sense of acceleration. Similarly, the new 1.5-chamber exhaust pipe adopts a left-right symmetrical exhaust pipe arrangement, which can guide sound pressure to both sides of the machine, increasing the torque when opening the throttle. The low-suspension exhaust design also focuses on mass and is much lighter than the previous generation.

The XSR900's Quick Shift System (QSS) is now installed on the 2022 XSR900 as original equipment. By enabling fast, clutchless shifts on the gearbox, the system makes full-speed acceleration more exciting, downshifts faster and smoother, and fewer chassis interruptions when shifting gears.

Another feature now installed as the original equipment of the new XSR900 is cruise control. The easy-to-program system reduces rider fatigue and makes long-distance travel and highway riding more enjoyable.

With timeless style and modern sports performance, the 2022 XSR700 returns to Yamaha's Sport Heritage series, bringing some key updates and a new classic dark color scheme. The 2022 XSR700 is the favorite of riders looking for an exhilarating machine with fashion advantages. It matures without losing its versatility and fun.

The new round LED headlights inspired by tradition improve the lighting effect. The new integrated headlight bracket is now connected to the front fork guard for a more compact front styling.

The cockpit layout has been modified, the inverted LCD instrument has been repositioned to improve visibility, and information can now be controlled via the left handlebar switch. The design of lines and positions match the new headlights, making the bike look more fashionable. The switchgear has also been upgraded to make it more user-friendly. XSR700 is also equipped with a larger 298mm front brake disc and a new radiator side cover.

The 2022 XSR700 is available in Raven and will begin to arrive at dealers in December this year, with a suggested retail price of US$8,799.

Yamaha's popular adventure Ténéré 700 will return in 2022 in two new color options: Team Yamaha Blue and Raven. The Ténéré 700 in 2022 will arrive at dealers in January this year, with a suggested retail price of US$10,299.
